MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOAT SAFETY TIPS AND LOCAL DESTINATIONS
Are you and your boat ready for the chaos that will be Memorial Day Weekend? This week, May 18-24, 2019, is National Safe Boating Week, a campaign that promotes boating and life jacket safety to boaters across the country. Their message is to encourage boaters to be prepared for anything and to follow the safety tips listed below this weekend, and ultimately, every time they operate a boat.
SAFETY TIPS:
Boating Safety Checklist- Prior to any boating season, it is critical that your vessel receives a thorough inspection to ensure that all of your equipment is up to date. You can contact the USCG, who will inspect your boat for free. When you pass, they will give you a sticker to put on the side of your boat to let other boaters know that your boat has passed all safety tests.
Don’t drink alcohol- Operating a boat and drunk driving are the causes of 19% of water-related fatalities.
Wear a life jacket – In nearly 85 percent of fatal boating accidents, the operator was not wearing one. Check the fit of your life jackets for your family and friends. The brighter the color, the more effective the life jacket!
Learn more! In 81% of boating accidents, the operator had received no safety training. Learn about your local laws, navigation routes, and the vessel.
Take it easy! Be courteous and watch out for those around you when driving in congested areas.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH DESTINATIONS
If you happen to be boating in the Wrightsville Beach area, make sure you check out three of the hottest destinations to celebrate your Memorial Day Weekend!
Masonboro Island
Masonboro is a barrier island accessible only by boat. Because it is undeveloped, the island is rich in coastal habitats and wildlife. Many happy beachgoers gather on Memorial Day weekend to celebrate the holiday with their friends, families, and pets. This is an excellent location for a weekend boat trip!
Mason’s Inlet
Mason’s Inlet is a nice little spot nestled between the north end of Wrightsville Beach and the beautiful Figure Eight Island. Between the great location and the perfect weather, this will be an excellent spot to bring your group this weekend. Keep an eye out for sandbars and strong currents.
Palm Tree Island
Palm Tree Island, one of the more intriguing landmarks in Wrightsville Beach, is a small island located in the Intracoastal waterway that is only visible at low tide. As the weather begins to warm up, this is a popular spot for people to celebrate Memorial Day on Saturday. Just remember to time it correctly so that there are plenty of islands to enjoy while avoiding getting your boat stuck!
We hope you take the precaution tips seriously and have a fun, safe Memorial Day Weekend out on the water!
