BOATING WITH DOGS: MUST-KNOW TIPS
You never want your furry friend to miss out on those perfect boat days, so of course, you bring them along for the cruise. Knowing how to keep them safe aboard your vessel will allow your dog and you to make the most out of your trip. Here are some tips on how to keep your dog safe and be aware of signs of dehydration and seasickness.
SAFETY TIPS FOR BOATING WITH YOUR DOG
BUY A CANINE LIFEJACKET
You are required to have as many lifejackets on board as there are guests, therefore this rule should apply to your dog as well. A canine life vest will keep the dog afloat if they get thrown off the boat by accident. There is a handle attached to the top of the vest to allow for a secure hold, so you are able to lift the dog in the air like a dumbbell. There are vests of all sizes with adjustable straps to fit all types of breeds.
DEVELOP A DOG OVERBOARD PLAN
Similar to having a person overboard plan that lists all the steps you need to take if the situation turns into an emergency. Write out exactly what you need to do, such as check the dog’s pulse and perform CPR if they are not breathing. Be sure to include shut down of the boat engine in this plan as well, the last thing you want is to have little to no gas to take you to a nearby dock if need be.
AVAILABLE SOURCE OF FRESHWATER
Dogs overheat fast especially during the summer months of extreme heat and the blazing sun. The only available water source on a boat is saltwater which will dehydrate the dog rapidly. Teach your furry friend to not drink the ocean water and provide them with ample amounts of fresh water aboard.
SOME KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER
If you are taking the dog on the boat for one of your fishing adventures be sure to keep them away from all the bait and tackle. Be mindful of where you put your fishhooks and make sure the dog does not try and taste the fish you catch. The last thing you want is to rush the dog to the hospital due to your negligence.
Keep an eye out for motion sickness symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, and dizziness. Just like humans, dogs can also get seasick, if you notice any of these signs take your dog to a dock as soon as possible. Boating is not for everyone! Keep an eye on your pup to make sure he is enjoying boating or simply would rather be at home.
