The 332-foot, blue and white, superyacht Aviva created lots of attention when it was docked at the Charleston City Marina earlier this summer. The yacht towered over all of the other boats docked at the marina causing many inquiries about the owner of the yacht and what this person was doing in town for the weekend. The yacht is owned by the billionaire, British investor Joe Lewis, an 81-year-old who spends most of his time on the yacht because it is his “mobile office.” Lewis has an estimated net worth of $5.1 billion and according to Forbes magazine he is the 5th richest man in the United Kingdom, when he is not traveling on this luxury vessel he is usually at his home in the Bahamas.

The superyacht was launched in January 2017 and was designed by British design studio, Reymond Langton, the Aviva being their biggest yacht to date. After Lewis signed the contract to purchase this yacht it was delivered within 33 months, this is his 4th superyacht.

There are many things that make this yacht unique; less engine output is required, fuel capacity is reduced, and the maximum speed is 20 knots. One of the special features on the Aviva is the hybrid drive system which allows the yacht to run up to 11 knots without the use of the main engines and only using the electric motors. Also, the powerful looking hull is the result of trial and error on how to ensure superior sea keeping abilities combined with a 20% decrease in drag. Due to Aviva’s impressive volume, it was the winner at this year’s World Superyacht Awards which took place on May 19th in Florence.

Making it into the top 50 world’s largest yachts, the main feature on the Aviva is the indoor, full-sized padel tennis court with a length of 20 meters and a width of 10 meters, this is the first yacht to ever have an indoor padel tennis court. The court is also 6.65 meters high making it a huge space that normally wouldn’t fit on any other type of yacht. Lewis uses this boat mainly as an office space and a gymnasium, the gym on the Aviva is the largest gym on any yacht. Lewis encourages the crew members to play on the court and when the court is not in use for tennis, the net can be removed and space can be used for multiple purposes.

The indoor court sits along the yacht’s hull and stretches down the bottom of its draft. Outside of the tennis court, there is a small lounging and viewing area up a series of stairs. Another main attraction on the yacht is Lewis’ $1 billion art collection that reportedly sails around the world on the yacht with him. His private art collection is one of the world’s largest and includes artwork from many famous artists. The Aviva is definitely one of the biggest boats to visit Charleston but not the biggest one in history. When the mega dock opened at the marina in 2003, a 454-foot Rising Sun came to dock there for a few days. Superyachts are some of the most luxurious vessels in the world so make sure you check out at this amazing Aviva!
